In this masterclass, Jotón, a prominent figure in Spain’s underground electronic scene, shares his expertise in producing groovy, textural techno. Based in León, Spain, Jotón has honed a distinctive techno style that blends modern innovation with classic sensibility. He begins by demonstrating the use of Ableton Live’s stock drum kits, showcasing how to craft compelling rhythms.
Utilising the Granulator, he creates unique melodies and drum patterns, adding depth to the composition. Jotón experiments with rhythm using Reaktor blocks, introducing innovative variations to the track’s groove. He employs creative delay and reverb techniques to evolve sounds over time, enhancing the track’s atmosphere. Layering multiple kick drums, he achieves a groovier and more dynamic low end.
Transitioning to mixing and arrangement, Jotón arranges on the spot for a faster workflow, demonstrating efficient production techniques. He addresses the complexities of mixing multiple low-end elements, ensuring clarity and punch. Using Ableton Live’s stock audio effects, he enriches the sound of individual elements, adding character and depth. Finally, Jotón delves into panning and stereo mixing, creating a wide and immersive soundstage. The Spanish Underground electronic scene would not be the same without Jotón, a respected DJ and producer who has been dignifying his profession and designing unconventional sounds for more than 20 years. From his studio in the city of León, he has managed to create his own style based on the most orthodox Techno which has been imitated by artists from all over the world. He is also the founder of the label Newrhythmic, with which he has supported national and international artists for more than 2 decades.
Jotón is a tireless and prolific creator. His work has been published by labels as important as Fabric, Modularz, Quartz, Odd Even, Symbolism, Planet Rhythm, Raw Raw, Dynamic Reflection, or Skryptöm. Furthermore, his work has been played by artists such as Ben Klock, DVS1, Rodhad, Dave Clarke, Ben Sims, Oscar Mulero, Surgeon, Truncate or Go Hiyama.
In 2015 he released his first album ‘Casting Out Nines’, a work that received excellent reviews from the specialized press and conquered Techno lovers. ‘Casting Out Nines’ was undoubtedly one of the best albums of that year and moreover, it was presented in 10 countries on 3 different continents. 2017 saw the release of his second major project, ‘R3silient’, in which Jotón delved into his purest and most analog side, and thanks to which returned to the roots of Techno. In 2018 he releases two new works, `Antioquia ́ on the German label ODD EVEN and `Extreme Mesures ́ on RAW RAW.
Jotón complements his DJ/Producer facet with teaching. His Production Courses are interactive experiences in which the student gets to perfect his technique and shape his sound. His latest album `Hikikomori ́ was born from these courses in 2021. `Hikikomori ́ could be defined as collaborative work with students and friends that narrates the experience of isolation produced by the pandemic.
Jotón has been a protagonist in the booths of some of the best clubs in the world.
